A Safe Space

I was heard last week.  That's right heard, not listened to but heard.  Is there a difference?  Some argue you can hear someone but not really listen or "take in" what is being said.

But in my case, more than my voice was being heard.  My emotions, my past, my demons all got a voice and this person heard me… heard all of it.
It was a very healing process, one that I am not sure I can ever repay.  This person put aside any judgement on the situation and held a space for me to express a wound to him that had nothing to do with him.  There was no ask, no question, but a space made of compassion from one being to another saying, "I hear you and I will be a witness to your process."
What is that process?  Allowing myself to speak from the heart, from my truest self.  It is a place of vulnerability, where at any given moment I could be wounded.  But I trusted him.  I had to.  I wanted to.  The wound needed to breathe, and every time I held back from speaking my truth, speaking about my true feelings, the wound grew bigger.
So many of us walk around with wounds from our past.  Some wear it on their sleeves. Others run from it or only pick at the scars in the dark.  Time helps, but inevitably something will come to trigger that tender spot and then you start to bleed again, and wound feels fresher than ever.
But what if we were given a safe space to peel back that wound and allow it some air?  What if we could do this for another?  Not just listen with the chance to interject with our own opinions on what to do or how to feel...Not to defend, justify or excuse anything.  But just to hold a safe space for a wound to heal.
What a gift.
I was blessed with this space last week, and I will be eternally grateful.
Sometimes you just need to be heard.
Thank you.
